"Unlike his recent memoirs, Breakthrough (1995) and The Secret School (1996), Strieber's latest foray into ufology is not so much a personal quest to understand his own abduction experiences but more an attempt to present physical evidence that UFO abductions should be taken seriously. Along the way, he offers one new firsthand account involving a bizarre implant in his outer ear that defied an attempt to have it surgically removed. Indeed, if implants taken from the bodies of abductees are found to be manufactured objects with an odd chemical structure and the ability to affect the human nervous system, they would constitute the strongest possible evidence that abductions are not fantasies or lucid dreams. For the past few years, Strieber has collected implant data from X rays, CAT and MRI scans, and surgical extractions. Although not one of these tiny objects has "Made in Zeta Reticuli" stamped on it, Strieber does present a good argument for medical researchers to take a closer look. His other evidence includes an increasing number of videotaped sightings of UFOs and other peculiar aerial phenomena, especially in Mexico; a vast number of abduction narratives (more than 30,000 offering "detailed descriptions of the encounters") that people have shared with him over the past 10 years; and recent advances in understanding the biological nature of memory and false-memory syndrome. This is by far his most important book, the first one ever to present physical evidence that there might be something very real happening to people who have close encounters.
Objects that cannot be explained by science have been removed from the bodies of witnesses - Strieber included - and studied by scientific experts.
Whitley Strieber reports on the efforts of scientists to understand these objects - including the one that was found in his own body in October of 1997, and the incredible event that took place when an attempt was made to remove it.
He discusses the experiences of other abductees who have had implants removed - including one who ended up involved in a stunning multiple-witness event a few months after her operation.
Strieber makes an urgent call for help. Continued governmental denial, media derision and scientific inaction are a grave mistake. They mean that mankind is remaining passive in the face of what could be an extraordinary threat - or a fabulous opportunity.
The book describes numerous techniques that science can use to gain an understanding of what is happening. Confirmation is divided into three sections, covering three critical areas of hard evidence.
"Theater In the Sky," offers powerful evidence that UFO video should not be ignored, especially not the Space Shuttle mission video showing unknown objects that has been explained away by NASA. It demonstrates that the work of a NASA aeronautical engineer, Dr. Paul Hill, de facto proves Project Blue Book was indeed a coverup. It discusses the efforts Strieber made, using highly sophisticated equipment, to gain final answers about the amazing close-up UFO videotaped over Mexico in August of 1997, and the his startling conclusions relate to Dr. Hill's work.
"Close Encounter As It Really Is" offers a totally new picture of the close encounter experience based on the hundreds of thousands of letters Strieber has received. If there are aliens here, then an incredibly important message is present in these stories. They are, in effect, our first communication from the visitors. This section ends with chapter on the chilling evidence of secret mind control research that is taking place behind the closed doors of the intelligence community, and an urgent demand that it be made public.
"Hard Evidence," discusses the efforts of Strieber and the Communion Foundation to gain evidence of implants, the pioneering work of Dr. Roger Leir, and - for the first time anywhere - the analysis of implants done by skilled scientists using world-class equipment that resulted in a finding that one of these objects has unknown properties that suggest it is a piece of technology.
The book ends with an amazing interview by Monsignor Corrado Balducci of the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith in the Vatican. Msgr. Balducci discusses his personal opinions about extraterrestrials and offers an astonishing new religious perspective.
